In 2013, SCP has three campuses at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), Communication University of China (CUC) and Zhejiang University (ZJU) respectfully. All these three campuses are located in metropolitan areas, which convenient students to enjoy the city life.
In specific, SCP Shanghai is located at SISU Hongkou campus, SCP Beijing is located at CUC main campus, and SCP Hangzhou is located at ZJU Huajiachi campus.
Who attends SCP International Summer School?
SCP welcomes all students, who met admission criteria, to apply for the program. SCP mainly focus on university students from overseas to attend the program; however, local students and high school students can also get benefits through this program by getting first-hand experience on international standard undergraduate studies.
Can I apply for SCP if I am taking only language courses (ESL, IEP, etc.) at my university/ college?
Yes, as long as you enrolled in your university; otherwise, you will be treated as a high school applicant.
Can I apply for SCP as a freshman without college GPA or transcript?
Yes, but you must submit your transcript on orientation day (June 30th 2013), and your academic grades must pass SCP admission criteria; otherwise, SCP reserves the rights to cancel your enrollment.
Application & Academics
What are the academic expectations for students?
All college students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0/4.0, and pass language requirement. High school students must have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0, satisfy language requirement and will start their last one or two year high school studies after the program.
How do I apply?
You can apply the program though our online application system before June 1st 2013. There are several early action deadlines before the final deadline, and students can receive tuition discount by enrolling early.
Do I need to apply with an official transcript?
Not necessary. But you must submit an unofficial transcript online or bring it on orientation day (June 30th 2013).
What courses and programs do you offer?
In 2013, SCP offers over 90 courses in Accounting, Art History, Economics, English, History, Math, Statistics, Marketing, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, Politics, Chinese language and studies, etc. Please refer our Course Listto get details.
Do some of the courses have prerequisite?
Yes, and students take their responsibilities to determine if they can take one course; otherwise, students may be required to drop the course if they don’t meet the course prerequisite. Course prerequisite can be found at each course’s syllabus.
What’s the class size of SCP courses?
For College Writing or Public Speaking, the upper limit for enrollment is 20 or 25. For other courses, the upper limit may vary from 50 to 100, but normally there will be less than 50 students each class.
How many classes can I take during the summer?
University students can take up to three courses, and high school students can take up to two courses; however, SCP encourages all students to take no more than two courses.
Does SCP hire Teaching Assistants for its courses?
Yes. Please refer to our recruitment page to get more information.
Are the classrooms air conditioned?
Yes. All SCP’s host universities provide American standard teaching facilities.
What textbooks are required for my courses?
Please refer to each course’s syllabus to get textbook information. Students should be noticed that they must get textbooks ready before arrive on campus. SCP also provides affordable textbook services at around $50 each course; students must purchase them through SCP Ultimate Textbook Solution before April 15 2013, due to the time cost of international shipment and custom.
Is there tutorial assistance available?
Yes, they are international or local graduate students or upper class undergraduate students. They come to help students with their academic work. A student can make an appointment with them or walk in to their office hours to ask any academic related questions in their fields.
Can I take Explore China Program without register any course at the summer school?
Yes, but please contact with international@scpeducation.org to get detailed instructions for this option.
Credit Transfer
How do I transfer my credits back to my university/ college?
Normally, a student should get course pre-approval at their school/college, then submit relevant forms at study abroad office before departure. After the student completed the program, he/she should bring the transcript to credit transfer/admission office to finalize the process. However, this process varies at each university, and a student should consult his/her academic or study abroad advisor to get the most accurate information.
Can SCP guarantee that credits earned at SCP can be transferred to my home university/ college?
Although SCP works with many universities to ensure credit transfer and hires hundreds of student ambassadors to help students to complete this process; SCP is not allowed to guarantee that students can 100% transfer the credits back to their home institution.
Will my GPA at SCP influence my GPA at my home university/ college?
Students usually only transfer credits back rather than GPA; however, there are a few universities do transfer GPA. You should consult with your advisor to make sure your school’s policy.
How do I obtain an official transcript?
SCP jointly issues transcripts with host universities. Grades will be finalized in one week after the program ends, and official transcripts will be issued and mailed out then. SCP issues and sends 2 official transcripts to 2 addresses (Home address, School Address). If the Home Address is a Chinese address, the transcript will be sent via YTO Express(圆通快递); if it’s an American/ Canadian address, the transcript will be sent via first class mail. As for the School Address, the transcript will be sent via DHL to university’s credit transfer office. Additional official transcripts can be request at USD5 (RMB30) each here, not including mailing fees. Transcripts are official only if the seal remains unbroken.
Which institution will issue the transcripts?
SCP transcripts are issued by host universities. Grades will be finalized in one week after SCP ends, and official transcripts will be issued and mailed out then. SCP will send one official transcript directly to students’ School Address (the university’s credit transfer office of the university that the student is currently attending), and another official transcript to students’ Home Address. Transcripts are official only if the sealed envelopes remain unbroken.
Housing & Student Life
Does SCP provide room and board for students?
SCP provides international dormitory for students. The housing fee does not include meals plan; however, students can dine either on campus or off campus, and enjoy inexpensive local and international food.
Can I choose not to live on campus?
Sure. Student housing is not mandatory for Chinese students. However, SCP strongly suggests international students (non-Chinese citizenship) to live on campus.
Where do the dormitories located?
They are located at either on campus or within walking distance to campus.
Is the dorm room a double or a single?
It is a double room (2 double beds) shared by two students.
Can I reserve a single room?
Unfortunately, we do not have that many rooms available; thus, a student cannot live in a single room.
Can I choose to live with my friend?
If you would like to live with another SCP resident student, you can request roommate in application system [under “Events”]. Remember that to make a roommate request, you must know the fullname and SCP Student ID of the roommate you would like to request. Their SCP Student ID is found in their application system. Mutual roommate requests submitted by May 1st 2013 will be honored, provided that they do not conflict with SCP housing administration and enforcement.
Is the dorm building coed?
SCP Buildings are all coed (female and male in the same building). Male and female students are housed in separate rooms.
How do the dorm rooms furnished/ equipped?
Each room has 24/7 shower, separated restroom/bath, wired internet, 2 double beds, cable TV and air conditioning.
What should I pack to SCP?
All SCP students need to have a laptop with internet access to use Moodle system, do homework, etc. On orientation day (June 30th 2013), take a photo ID (Chinese National ID or passport), recent unofficial/ official transcript, and a pen with you to fill out forms. SCP also encourages students to bring suits (business professional) with them for career panels, company visits, and executive talks events.
A cell phone or calling card to make local and long distance calls (Most international students find it easier and cheaper to use a prepaid Chinese cell phone rather than switching their US/ Canada phone for international use. Consult with your cell phone provider for unlocking your phone for international use.)
Note: Cooking appliances are not permitted to bring to campus.
Are laundry facilities available?
Washing machines are available, but a small fee (around $1) may be charged each time. Dryers are not guaranteed on campus, but local laundry shops always have them.
Are the residence halls air conditioned?
Yes.
How does SCP connect us to local Chinese businesses?
We arrange career panels, company visits, and executive talks for students to connect to Chinese businesses. Each summer, SCP invites CEOs, partners, HR executives, and senior managers from investment banking, law, accounting, management consulting, engineering, entrepreneurship, venture capital, private equity, real estate, and etc.
Financial Information
How do I pay my tuition, fees, and/or housing?
You can pay them by cash, wire transfer, PayPal, 99bill (快钱) with debit cards or credit cards. We accept both USD and RMB.
Are the Early Action deadlines for application or payment?
Students need to make full payments by the deadlines to receive Early Action discounts.
What should I do if my bank card is not processed/ has an amount limit?
You can contact your local bankers, or email finance@scpeducation.org to get assistance, or you can try another method to make a payment.
How and when will I get informed after wire transfer?
It usually takes no more than 2 business days for us to confirm your wire transfer payment, and we will inform you via online application system and email. However, international wire transfer may take longer depends on the process time of your bank.
Does SCP International Summer School offer financial aids?
Yes. SCP offer significant number of financial aids opportunities to international and domestic students, such as Academic Excellence Scholarship, Diversity Financial Aids, University Financial Aids, Student Ambassador Aids, and Alumni Benefits. Can I transfer the credits to my future university/ college?
SCP cannot “guarantee” any credit transfer, but students may transfer SCP credits to their future institutions as elective credits, or even fulfill their major, minor, specialization/distribution requirements. If a student has already admitted by an overseas institution, he or she should consult with their study abroad office, registrar’s office and/or department advisors from that institution to get pre-approvals in advance. SCP provides a precious opportunity and rewarding experience for high school and local university students to gain high quality U.S. and Canada style education experience, learn from professors from IVY League and other prestigious institutions, and interact with diverse student body, which may help them to success on future studies application and oversea studies.
For International Students (non-Chinese citizen)
Are the courses taught in English or Chinese?
All SCP courses are taught in English with the exception of the Chinese language courses.
Can I survive in Beijing/ Shanghai without speaking a word of Chinese?
Yes. In these big cities, most young and some mid-aged people speak some English, and they are willing to help and practice their English with you. Most signs and notices are bilingual. It’s also a best way to pick up some Mandarin, or even some Shanghainese during your stay.
Are there special admissions requirements for international students?
No. All students must demonstrate a serious intent to study could apply for SCP International Summer School.
Does SCP have Chinese language prerequisites?
There are no Chinese language prerequisites. However, students are encouraged to learn a little bit conversational Chinese before coming to China. Also, learning some Chinese culture and history will help you gain more from the experience of SCP.
Who should sign off on my Home Institution Approval Form?
Your study abroad advisor. You may also have to work with your academic advisor for course approval. Please make sure that the Home Institution Approval form is filled out properly. Taking care of this now will help you receive credit for your overseas academic work later.
Can I contact a student who has already studied abroad with SCP?
How do I obtain for a visa for entering China? Which type of visa should I apply for? Does SCP help me with the visa application?
Students should apply for a 60-day L-type visa by themselves or through travel agencies. It will be a simple process, and students can also seek help from us by emailing international@scpeducation.edu.
Do I need accidental or health insurance for the summer?
Although SCP purchases accidental insurance for all students, and it covers from 6/30/2013 until 8/12/2013, we highly encourage students to purchase additional insurance to cover extra days they plan to stay in China as well as the trip from home to school.
Do I need to take some vaccine before traveling abroad?
It is absolutely unnecessary unless you plan to travel to rural areas of China.
Yes. High speed internet is available in dorm rooms. If you would like to use Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube in China, you could purchase VPN service to get unrestricted internet service.
Where do I eat?
Food is not included in housing fees. You could choose to eat at cafeteria or local restaurants. Meals are as cheap as $1-$10 per person, depending on your food choices. We bet you would love to try some local Chinese food, not Starbucks and McDonald's every day. We would give you many recommendations and would love to show you around during orientation.
Do I need a cell phone when I study abroad in China?
Most students find it easier and cheaper to use a prepaid Chinese cell phone rather than switching their US/ Canada phone for international use.
Can I just use my smart phone abroad?
Please consult with your cell phone provider on their international rates to see if the increased call and data plans fit your budget.
How early can I come to the China before the session starts? How long can I stay in China after Summer Sessions ends? Does SCP provide trips to Chinese tourist attractions?
You may come earlier before or stay longer after SCP International Summer School. Normally your visa will allow you to stay for 60 days, which will give you 2-3 weeks for traveling. You can find a list of cultural tours at SCP’s Explore China Program.
If I arrive early, can I live on campus? Will I be charged for that?
International Students who live on campus are expected to arrive on the Saturday (Jun 29th 2013) before first week of class. If you arrive earlier than that, you will be accepted with an extra fee (approximately $25 to $45/night; depend on campus). See Moving In & Out.
Does SCP provide airport pickup service?
Airport pickup service (from Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai Pudong Airport, and Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport) starts four days before class starts, i.e. from June 27, 2013 (Thursday) to June 29, 2013(Saturday). There will be an additional charge of RMB200 (approx. $30 USD). If an international student of Hangzhou campus arrive in Shanghai Pudong airport, SCP's service only operate on June 29, 2013 (Saturday) to transport students from Shanghai airport to Hangzhou campus.
Do I need to check-in or report to anyone upon arrival?
Yes. All international students are required to check-in (with passport and visa documents) and attend International Student Orientation on the Sunday before class starts.
Can I arrive after the session has started?
No. The summer schedule condenses an entire semester in a few weeks. Each SCP class day is equivalent to about a week of regular semester. Students are not permitted to arrive late due to the intension of the time.
How do I get around in town?
Subway, bus, and taxi are very economical and convenient. All SCP campuses are located in downtown areas, which help you develop intimate relationship with the metropolises. Are Beijing/ Shangha safe for international students?
It’s very safe in big cities of China, esp. Beijing, Shanghai. All of SCP host universities are located in downtown areas with safe and convenient communities- all of them are safer than New York. According to Global Times and Shanghaiist, Beijing accommodates 180,000 foreign residents, and Shanghai accommodates 210,000. Most Chinese people are friendly, hardworking, and warm hearted.
How does SCP ensure safety of international students?
Besides visa and air tickets help, airport pickup (at a fee charged, optional), and international student orientation, SCP provides accidental insurance, 24/7 Residential Staff support, quality and safe housing on or near campus.
